About the event

The National Mental Health ECHO, Community of Practice for MH Providers Treating LGBTQ+ Veterans series, provides advanced training to mental health providers through didactics and practice-based discussions. The goal of the series is to support competent clinical practice by creating a community of providers who can utilize one another for support in their work with LGBTQ+ patients, as well as satisfy continuing education needs. LGBTQ+ Veterans face many health disparities and few mental health providers receive specialized training in working with LGBTQ+ people, meaning that many mental health providers lack the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to work effectively with LGBTQ+ patients. Further, there is no existing community of practice platform which is accessible to all mental health providers. The series will explore various aspects of working with LGBTQ+ patients, with the goal of increasing mental health professionals’ competencies in working with this population.

This particular live, knowledge based lecture seeks to help health care teams identify ways in which they can support men LGBTQ+ Veterans who are using substances. Few existing trainings cover the unique needs of LGBTQ+ Veterans who use substances, meaning this training would fill a knowledge gap for many clinicians.
